Black Mold Causing Problems in Boulder Homes

Boulder students have more than just rent to worry about in their homes. The problem is black mold, and if not properly identified and treated, can cause serious damage and health risks. "I looked into my closet one day and I noticed some black spots" said CU student Blake Rocker. "We had some people test it and it was black mold. I had to move out immediately. They let me out of my lease it was so dangerous"

This is not a normal kind of mold. Toxins released from the mold in humid, wet areas -- like behind floorboards, inside cabinets, and underneath drywall -- can cause serious health problems that could lead to hospitalization. "Waking up not breathing, asthma, sinus infections, and swollen hands," said Boulder Resident Jill Iwaski. "But the biggest problem that was the hardest to convey to others was what they call brain fog, which is neurological problems"

Iwaski no longer has many belongings, and is living in the Boulder Outlook Hotel while searching for a suitable home. "You can't save anything" she said. "You can't bring it to the next place, bring it to another house, or you start a whole other mold problem.

With the onset of spring, students will begin their search for new housing, and rental agencies are required by federal law to have all tenants sign a mold addendum. This addendum requires the tenants keep the house clean, but there is no guarantee from rental agencies that the house is mold free. All students are encouraged to have their house tested to avoid this potentially dangerous mold.
