After the publication of article "If Its a War They Want...Its a War They'll Get" last February, the CU Independent came under harsh scrutiny for their diversity policies.
The article was a racially centered satire targeted towards the Asian community written by Max Karson, a controversial editor at the paper. His article was meant to shed light on the treatment and stereotypes of the Asian community. He stated: "white people are quick to ridicule Asians. They have no problem with making demeaning remarks...they would never say about black people."
The article brought harsh criticism that caused the CU Independent to re-evalaute their policies. In fact, the paper had no policies or training before regarding diversity, sexual harassment or discrimination.
"All we really wanna do is move forward. We really just want to better ourselves, better the publication, and better the campus," said Lauren Friedman, the editor in chief.
A year later, they have initiated numerous diversity initiatives among their staff, including diversity trainings, a student diversity advisory board, and a "Inclusivity Campaign" against intolerance on campus.
To create a more inclusive environment, the CU Independent is launching a print publication called "Community Journalism" this spring, inviting students from the campus to provide content.
