NASA Satellite Crashes

Satellite Taurus was launched but failed to orbit

At 1:55am Tuesday, NASA launched its Taurus satellite from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The satellite, strapped to an XL rocket, launched as scheduled but three minutes later trouble arose. The satellite failed to separate from the XL rocket as commanded and fell into the ocean just short of Antarctica.

The satellite's purpose was to track carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere, a frequently researched topic here in Boulder. The crash was a huge disappointment for the entire team who spent years and millions on this project.

NewsTeam Boulder is a cable television program produced by students in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

It is Boulder's only television newscast, and is also broadcast on cable channel 63.

It is also broadcast over the Web at noon (MST) on Tuesdays and Thursdays. You will need a QuickTime viewer to watch the streaming broadcast.
