A student group called "Student Worker", has launched a petition to change the name of Colorado's first high school from Boulder High to Barack Obama High, in honor of the newly elected 44th president.
Even if support for the change is overwhelming, it's far from a guarantee. If the district superintendent supports the measure, they form a committee of students and community members to discuss the change. Then they must gain approval from a majority of the seven-member board education.
However, some students think it's doubtful the measure will get that far. Rein Himmons, for one, has doubts about the idea. "I think it's ridiculous," he said. "I think the school should stay the same way it's been named for all these years, you know. It's Boulder High, not Barack Obama High School." For student Gus Framarina, Obama hasn't accomplished enough to be honored like this. "I think it's a pretty stupid idea," he said. "He hasn't really done anything great yet. Sure, he's a good guy and he's up for change, but it's Boulder High."
The Boulder Valley School District is remaining neutral on the proposal. "We're not taking a position on it," said district spokesperson Briggs Gamblin. "The name of a public building is a reflection of the community."
Boulder High isn't the only school to consider the Obama moniker. The former Ludlum Elementary in Long Island, New York changed its name to Barack Obama Elementary school in November after the president won the election.
