Residents of Boulder County are getting environmentally friendly light this spring, but it's not as friendly as most think.

While compact fluorescent light bulbs can last anywhere from eight to 10 years and use less energy than normal bulbs, their five milligrams of mercury could potentially build up at waste sites if the bulbs are not recycled properly.

Home owners once had no options to safely dispose of the bulbs, but now that's changed. More than 104 local Colorado Ace Hardware stores are opening their recycling bins to CFL bulbs.

Residents of Boulder County, Broomfield County, and the Town of Erie can also take them to the Boulder County Household Hazardous Waste facility, located at 5880 Butte Mill Road.

If CFL bulb users have no other options for recycling, it is recommended they place the bulb in two plastic bags and seal them before putting them in the outside trash for normal collection.

For more information on the materials taken at the Boulder Waste Facility, visit the household hazardous waste section online at: www.bouldercounty.org/recycling
